Title: Into This Furnace I Ask You Now to Venture
Author/Artist: smilla02
Rating: R
Length/Word Count: about 9,700 words
Warnings/Spoilers: Spoilers through season three.
Summary: They need more time.
Reccer's Comments: They'll take any risk to keep Dean out of Hell.

Title: Legend In My Time
Author scribblesinink
Rating: General
Length/Word Count: ~13,000
Warnings/Spoilers: 3.16 No Rest For The Wicked
Summary: To rescue Dean from the pit, Sam has to open the devil's gate—and for that, he needs the Colt. With the gun in Lilith's possession, there is only one other option left. But things don't quite turn out the way Sam expected them to….
Reccer's Comments: Written between Seasons 3 and 4, this is a wonderfully long plotty time-travel story in which the author not only very neatly sets up and executes on her premise of how Sam will get Dean out of hell but provides some very clever explanations of how the canon!verse came to be the way it is.

Author/Artist: Carry On
Rating: PG 13, mostly
Length/Word Count: a lot, 7 finished episodes so far
Warnings/Spoilers: none
Summary: What if the crossroads-demon refused Dean's Deal? "It is a project of a handful of young, ambitioned and only a little crazy fans. The episodes are just our own idea of fun and keeping the boys together.
We wrote this in favour of both boys. There will be no Sam-bashing and no Dean-bashing either."
Reccer's Comments: Whew. Interesting concept. It starts with the crossroad-demon refusing to make a deal for Sam and goes from there. No worries, Sam comes back. As to why and how... I don't know yet. There are multiple episodes with different case-fics and like in the show a plot-line throughout of which the end is not yet revealed. Oh...John is back too. They even have trailers and pictures for each episode.

This week's rec contributors, harrigan, twasadark, izhilzha, fish_echo, phorenice, july_july_july, cofax7, werewolfsfan, claudiapriscus, litponrm, marlowe78, tanaquific, feliciakw, and dotfic, will make you feel bad for not being as awesome as they are.

Title: Blind Man's Bluff
Author scribblesinink
Rating: General
Length/Word Count: ~2000 words
Warnings/Spoilers: 4.15 Death Takes A Holiday
Summary: Grieving for yet another lost friend, Dean and Sam are in for a surprise.
Reccer's Comments: As the author says in her notes: 'My first thought when Dean brought Pamela into the room was, "Yay!" But as soon as she opened her mouth, my second thought was, "Who the hell is this bitter, cynical woman? 'Cause it sure as hell ain't Pamela Barnes!"' This is a wonderful AU fixit that explains everything, with a great twist.

Title: Fistful of Rain
Author/Artist: marinarusalka
Rating: PG
Length/Word Count: One part
Warnings/Spoilers: Only for the pilot.
Summary: Five lives Dean Winchester didn't live
Reccer's Comments: One of the finest examples of a 'Five Things' fic that I've ever read. Dean Winchester and some of the ways things could have turned out.

Title: Grandcars
Author/Artist: derryderrydown
Rating: PG
Length/Word Count: One Part
Summary: Something's not right with Dean's car.
Reccer's Comments: Truckzilla gets knocked up by the Metallicar. Crackfic at its best.

Title: in the space where you belong
Author/Artist: acidquill
Rating: PG-13</b>
Length/Word Count: 2,923 words
Warnings/Spoilers: Spoilers for the Pilot
Summary: Dean goes to get his big brother at Stanford.
Reccer's Comments: Smart and heart-wrenching rendition of the world where Sam is the older brother.

Title: Five Families John Winchester Never Had
Author/Artist: cofax7
Rating: PG
Length/Word Count: 4,500
Warnings/Spoilers: general through season 2
Summary: Five roads that might have been taken.
Reccer's Comments: By turns poignant or chilling or hopeful, this is a compelling look at the variations of how the Winchesters' lives might have gone, with hunting and their bond to each other as the constant.
Reccer's Caveats: slight John/Mary

This week's rec contributors, harrigan, twasadark, izhilzha, fish_echo, phorenice, july_july_july, cofax7, werewolfsfan, claudiapriscus, litponrm, marlowe78, tanaquific, feliciakw and dotfic, will make you feel bad for not being as awesome as they are.

Title: Steam
Author/Artist: bellatemple
Rating: Adult, for themes, violence, and language
Length/Word Count: ~ 30,000 words in 5 moderately-lengthed chapters
Warnings/Spoilers: Post-apocalyptic AU, spins off canon at "Jus in Bello"
Summary: Dean was supposed to get a year, and then go to Hell. Instead, as far as he was concerned, he got most of a year, and then Hell came to him.
Reccer's Comments: Honestly, I cannot say enough good things about this one. It's an exciting, fast-paced, intriguing case(ish) story/mystery, and the voices are spot on. I could hear Jensen and Jared delivering the dialogue in my head, which puts me beside myself with glee. Also, an introduction of sorts to steampunk.

Title: Dog eat Dog
Author/Artist: Silver Ruffian
Rating: PG 13
Length/Word Count: 211,435
Warnings/Spoilers: only season 1 (maybe some of s2?)
Summary: After a hunt gone south, Dean Winchester discovers that he is the human half of the Trickster God Coyote.
Reccer's Comments: One of the first AUs I've read. I love this. I've always liked Tricksters and I love the Navajo-myths of Coyote. It's just damn good, in my opinion. She went and played in that universe some more, check out her ff.net profile.
Reccer's Caveats: It has some lengths and I think the Dean-whump went a little overboard. But heck, it doesn't really matter that much. I'm pretty sure there is mention of females and sex with them in here (It's Dean - and Coyote...) but I don't remember.

Title: Reality Check
Author/Artist: nong_pradu
Rating: R
Length/Word Count: 87,297
Spoilers: It's set in season one, so not really.
Summary: After a bad hunt, Dean wakes up to find that nothing is as it should be. Rubber rooms and padded walls, with no hope of escape, unless he can convince Sam that he's not crazy.
Reccer's Comments: Oh my God, that was SO creepy and so good. I can't say much about it, but it's awesome and it leaves you puzzled as to what is happening and why.
Reccer's Caveats: Sam/Jess (yeah, you see right!) and mentions Dean/OMC(s). But you'll be safe. Also Dean-whump, straight-jackets, drugs... Link goes to ff.net, there is an lj-version out but that has less chapters so I think it's not finished yet. I don't know if there are changes made in the lj-version. Don't think so, though.

Title: Of Bastard Saints
Author/Artist: nilchance
Rating: PG
Length/Word Count: dunno. 36 chapters.
Warnings/Spoilers: Through Season 1. Character maiming, violence, more angst than you can shake a stick at
Summary: After Devils Trap, Dean dies. Sam is devastated but doesn't believe it, John's leg is fucked up and someone with blue hair meets Vikings.
Reccer's Comments: Great fic, very good story-arch.
Reccer's Caveats: I've often heard the 'verse will be wincest, but this is totally gen and you don't need to read further parts to enjoy this one.

Our new theme is...

Humor & Crack

I feel like fandom could use some lightening up from the heartwrencher of the last few episodes. And now, with that behind us, perhaps we can find some room to breathe. Give me your gen humor and crack fics!

(You do not have to rec only according to the weekly theme. It's meant to be an inspiration, not a limitation. Feel free to share with us whatever gen you're loving, whether it has to do with the theme or not.)

rec guidelines and copypasta and stuffCollapse )

Current progress: 10/30

This post will be closed whenever I feel like it. Probably about a week from now, but who knows? I'm very forgetful lately.

Title: Redemption
Author: ASadisticWhim
Rating: T
Length/Word Count: 41,311
Summary: Dean walked out of hell without looking back.
Reccer's comments: This story is long and satisfying and is the best kind of hurt/comfort story. The boys are broken, and the healing is slow, painful, and believable. More than anything, this is an old fashioned love story between the brothers. The story is on ff.net and doesn't appear to have garnered the attention that it deserves.

Title: Nobody Wants to Die
Author/Artist: MottoVeilopVII
Rating: unrated
Summary: So, I originally thought this was going to be a straight-up Dean video and it turned out to be more of a reflection on all the death everyone goes through. Part of me wanted to do more with it, but I couldn't think of anything else.
Reccer's Comments: An addictive song and smooth, timely editing make this a true pleasure to watch and rewatch.

Title: Fox and Hound
Author/Artist: chibifrieza
Rating: PG
Length/Word Count: 3,340
Warnings/Spoilers: No warning I can think of.
Summary: The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog
Reccer's Comments: Set in season one, a very cool take on animal metamorphosis. The sensory details are beautiful and Dean and Sam recognizable even in animal form.

Title: Skin & Bone
Author/Artist: gabby_silang
Rating: PG-13 (language)
Length/Word Count: shortish
Warnings/Spoilers: up to and including 5.14
Summary: Now it was just this. The body between them. One mortal life split two ways, lived in shifts.
Reccer's Comments: A unique and engrossing take on Castiel in 2013.
Reccer's Caveats: Author's spoiler warnings say 5.14, but I'm only seeing up to 5.04.

Title: Trial of a Righteous Man
Author/Artist: Tahirire
Rating: R
Length/Word Count:1,381
Warnings/Spoilers: All aired episodes.
Summary: "And the Lord said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job?"
Reccer's Comments: There have been a lot of these episode tags recently, but this one stood out. Beautifully written, it could be said to be a meditation on a theme.

Title: Looking at the Sky
Author/Artist: Lassiterfics
Rating: PG
Length/Word Count: ~1000
Summary: Sam drunk-dials Dean during his first week at Stanford.
Reccer's Comments: I liked this; it struck just the right tone.

This week's rec contributors, harrigan, twasadark, izhilzha, smilla02, bellatemple, unoshot, jukeboxxed, faithburke, claudiapriscus, and pdragon76, make being awesome look hilariously easy.

Title: Dead Soldiers: An Oral History of the End Times
Author/Artist: fryadvocate girl_wonder (art by Sabeth nebst)
Rating: R (for language)
Length/Word Count: 43,400
Warnings/Spoilers: Religion, miracles, angels, demons, and the end times.
Summary: Although much has been written about the sociological and theological importance of the "End Times War", there has been much less written about the individuals directly involved. Using interviews with primary sources, this paper seeks to examine how Dean and Sam Winchester, two criminals with a history of violence and petty theft, became commonly known as a prophet of the Lord and the Anti-Christ.
Reccer's Comments: You've got to love an author who's not afraid to play with non-traditional formats, loads of original characters, and religion as more than just a mythological basis.
Reccer's Caveats: No seriously, there's a lot of OCs. I know they aren't everyone's cup of tea.
Link to the Good Stuff: master post

Title: Relative Gold
Author/Artist: ddayspring
Rating: R
Length/Word Count: 89,000
Warnings/Spoilers: None
Summary: AU. Dean's life goes in a whole other direction when Sam supposedly dies at age four. But while on the Shooting Team in the 2004 Olympics, Dean meets a tall, shaggy-haired swimmer. Can the yellow-eyed demon be far behind?
Reccer's Comments: Smart!Dean, Bobby, and Pastor Jim. Greece. The Olympics. Well worth the read.
Reccer's Caveats: Dean/OFC very briefly mentioned.

Title: Defect
Author/Artist: kikkimax
Rating: PG-13
Length/Word Count: 40,000
Warnings/Spoilers: language, violence, character death
Summary: Crossover between SPN and Criminal Minds. Goes AU before SPN season 3. Dean's year is almost up and he finds himself a guest of the BAU.
Reccer's Comments: The story that dragged me into the SPN fandom in the first place, this one will always hold a special place in my heart. A strong crossover that doesn’t really neglect either universe.
Reccer's Caveats: There is character death.

Title: Hell, and Back
Author/Artist: kikkimax
Rating: R
Length/Word Count: 43,000
Warnings/Spoilers: PTSD Dean, and language
Summary: Crossover between Supernatural and Criminal Minds, sequel to Defect and takes place approximately 6 months later. As Defect was written before season three, consider this an alternate universe
Reccer's Comments: A must-read the instant you finish Defect.
Reccer's Caveats: These two fics are not actually Big Bangs, but they're definitely Big Bang-epic!

This week's rec contributors, harrigan, twasadark, izhilzha, smilla02, bellatemple, unoshot, jukeboxxed, faithburke, claudiapriscus, and pdragon76, make being awesome look hilariously easy.
