Title: 9 to 5

Rating: G
Warnings/Spoilers: If you view this one on youtube, give it a couple of minutes to load to avoid skips.
Summary: It's just another day at the office.
Reccer's Comments: Smoothly edited and ties right in to the show and the idea that hunting is the “family business.”
Reccer's Caveats: Dean will never forgive you if he learns that you associate him with a Dolly Parton song!
Link to the Good Stuff: 9 to 5

Title: See The USA (In Your Chevrolet)
Author/Artist: lapillus
Rating: G

Warnings/Spoilers:
Summary:
Reccer's Comments: I think it only fair that Metallicar get to star in her own vids and fics once and a while!

Reccer's Caveats: Pretty darn sexy.
Link to the Good Stuff: The New Face of Sexy

Title: Out of My Mind
Author/Artist: wolfpup
Summary: Crazy... who says I'm crazy?
Reccer's Comments: It’s a very original concept and I was shocked at how well the chosen clips matched the song, “They’re Coming to Take Me Away, Ha Ha.”
Reccer's Caveats: I sincerely hope this isn’t prophetic for Season 6!

Title: Like Father, Like Sons
Author/Artist: ella_menno
Rating: PG-13/Teen
Length/Word Count: about 5000
Warnings/Spoilers: set pre-series so no spoilers for any season
Summary: Sam's 11, Dean's 15, and John is 41. For a while, anyway.
Reccer's Comments: This is pure crack!
Reccer's Caveats: Both Dean and Sam have this thing for a waitress but it's pretty much just flirting.

Title: Summer Camp
Author/Artist: gigglingkat
Rating: G
Length/Word Count: 5500
Warnings/Spoilers: Set pre-series with no spoilers. This fic is a shameless attack on the heartstrings. What kind of warning does that rate?
Summary: "I sent his brother to summer camp," he explained. "You heartless bastard," laughed the manager. "That seems to be the general consensus," John agreed.
Reccer's Comments: Adorable ain't quite the word for it. Gotta love tiny Sammy in this. And my heart goes out to those poor, poor counselors.

Title: Carjacking
Author/Artist: CaffieneKitty
Rating: PG-13
Length/Word Count: 730
Warnings/Spoilers: Wee!Chesters
Summary: Some cars have better anti-theft systems than others. Dean(10) Sam(6), OC POV.
Reccer's Comments: Refreshing look at the Winchester boys from an outsider's point of view. He thought he would slip into the car and drive off. He didn't count on the two kids sitting in the back seat.

Title: No Refills
Author/Artist: minkmix
Rating: PG
Length/Word Count: one shot
Summary: John's kids don't like being taken to the doctor's office.
Reccer's Comments: The author really conveys children well. I found them vivid and only slightly exaggerated in the way of all good story tellers.
Reccer's Caveats: maybe you don’t like kids…..

I have chosen to start off our crack-a-thon with one of my very favorite crack tropes--animal transformation!

Title: Stranger Things Have Happened (But Not Many)
Author/Artist: wofl_iron
Rating: PG-13
Length/Word Count: 2,558
Summary: Dean is a ferret and Sam's things keep going missing.
Reccer's Comments: This story is from a ways back, so some folks may have missed it. It was always one of my very favorite animal transformation fics. It had me rolling, and it's kind of sweet, too!
Reccer's Caveats: None, unless you're scared of ferrets!

Title: Everything I Know About Marine Biology I Learned From My Brother
Author/Artist: kroki_refur
Rating: PG-13
Length/Word Count: 2,060 words
Warnings/Spoilers: No sea-cucumber molestation involved!
Summary: Dean discovers the other use for the Internet
Reccer's Comments: Seriously, do I even need to comment? Angst-queen kroki_refur can, when the mood strikes, crank out some amazing, hysterical crackfic. This is one.
Reccer's Comments 2: You have to love the pictures. Seriously. Link clickage is, like, a must.
Reccer's Caveats: If squishy sea-creatures squick you...oh, what the heck, read it anyway!

Title: Stupid People
Author/Artist: maychorian
Rating: PG-13
Warnings/Spoilers: Set during season 5. I think.
Summary: Some people are cat people. Some people are dog people. And then there are people like Dean....
Reccer's Comments: I don't usually go for animal transformation fic, but this one is absolutely perfect, using the plot device both to throw zany cuteness at us and to reveal character and relationship.

Title: Of Unconventional Dealbreaking
Author/Artist: rionaleonhart
Rating: R for language
Length/Word Count: 2,200ish
Warnings/Spoilers: Spoilers for 'All Hell Breaks Loose Part Two'. Character transformation
Summary: Dean, much to his annoyance, gets turned into a unicorn.
Reccer's Comments: It's the one-liners that kill me.
Reccer's Caveats: Even as a unicorn, Dean has a potty mouth. And allusions to sexual fantasies.

This go-around's rec contributors, werewolfsfan, calamitycrow, wynefred, katiki7, daylightfire, roque_clasique, bellatemple, borgmama1of5, izhilzha, pinkphoenix1985, and riverbella, are more awesome than a tank parachuting out of an airplane with everyone on the A-Team shooting guns at the same time.

LOL, it's been exactly a month since the last time I posted a submission post. Yikes. Okay, if you guys think I'm too slow, send me a PM volunteering to co-mod. I obviously need more help. If you're okay with the status quo, of course, it'll just stay this way.

Our new theme is...

Arts & Crafts

Big Bang season is upon us, and I've really enjoyed seeing all the fantastic art that this fandom produces for this event. I'd love to see an emphasis this go-around on our oft-overlooked gen artists and other multimedia producers. Rec me art, vids, icons, podfics, fanmixes, knitting projects--anything. Keep recommending fics, too, of course. We can't let fics fall by the wayside. But let's see some particular appreciation for gen arts and crafts.

(You do not have to rec only according to the weekly theme. It's meant to be an inspiration, not a limitation. Feel free to share with us whatever gen you're loving, whether it has to do with the theme or not.)

rec guidelines and copypasta and stuffCollapse )

Current progress: 0/30

This post will be closed whenever I feel like it. Probably like a month from now, judging by last time.

And this cleans out my stash of AU recs. New submission post coming soon!

Title: Interesting Times
Author: Troll Princess, apocalypsos
Rating: R
Length/Word Count: ~4,100
Summary: Dean doesn't even think about the curse until the next morning, and by then it's too late.
Reccer's Comments: Surreal tale where every day Dean wakes to find a different "version" of Sam in the next bed!
Reccer's Caveats: I did mention surreal, didn't I?

Title: Family Comes First
Author: ethrosdemon
Rating: PG-13
Length/Word Count: ~3,600
Summary: "I can't believe my life has come to this, Sammy. Am I really the kind of guy who asks for a paternity test?" Dean's saying a whole lot more, about family and the road and Dad, but Sam just answers the surface question.
Reccer's Comments: Surprisingly satisfying for such a short future fic. Highly recommended!
Reccer's Caveats: (There are mentions of het sex but no sex scenes. This tale isn't a get together or romance fic.) Happy Ending?

Title: Unfinished Business
Author/Artist: apocalypsos
Rating: PG
Length/Word Count: ~1,000
Warnings/Spoilers: Spoilers for "In My Time of Dying."
Summary: AU following "In My Time of Dying", in which things go very, very wrong. Okay, even more wrong.
Reccer's Comments: The best kind of outside pov, heart-achy what-if.

Title: The Crow on the Cradle
Author/Artist: kroki_refur
Rating: PG 13
Length/Word Count: almost 100k
Warnings/Spoilers: Author says: "May have spoilers for all aired episodes. (Don't want to give anything away...)"
Summary: On October 2, 2005, Sam Winchester walked out of the apartment he shared with his girlfriend Jess in the middle of the night and didn't come back.
Reccer's Comments: Long and involved and JESS! Very winning fic.
Reccer's Caveats: angst level 9

Title: The Roaring of Lions, the Howling of Wolves
Author/Artist: Loki (secretlytodream)
Rating: -
Length/Word Count: 2:46 min
Warnings/Spoilers: Violence, Evil!boys. Clips up to 5.11, I think.
Summary: He tells his brother to kill.
Reccer's Comments: It's no secret secretlytodream makes awesome high quality vids. This one is especially compelling with its contrast between the calm song (almost a lullaby if you disregard the lyrics) and the creepiness of killer!Sam.
Reccer's Caveats: There's quite a lot of blood in this one - but if you can watch the show that shouldn't bother you, right?

This go-around's rec contributors, harrigan, twasadark, izhilzha, fish_echo, phorenice, july_july_july, cofax7, werewolfsfan, claudiapriscus, litponrm, marlowe78, tanaquific, feliciakw, and dotfic, will make you feel bad for not being as awesome as they are.

12 June 2010 @ 05:44 pm
Title: Metaphysical
Author/Artist: cjmarlowe
Rating: R
Length/Word Count: 78,500
Warnings/Spoilers: none
Summary: Three years after he turned in his horse and scattergun for frock coats and textbooks, Sam Winchester is tracked down to upstart Stanford University by his estranged brother Dean, who arrives with the news that their father has gone missing. His disappearance turns out to be only the first of a series of events that takes them all the way across an alternate America circa 1905, from the death of Sam's girlfriend to a haunting in Nebraska, from demonic omens to spiritualists to hijacked airships, and inevitably a long-delayed trip home. John Winchester isn't anxious to be found, but his sons are convinced that the family is stronger together than apart and don't let anything stand in the way of their pursuit. Especially once they realize that pursuing their father means staying on the trail of the demon who killed their mother. A demon who isn't finished with the Winchesters just yet.
Reccer's Comments: I actually read this, and fell in love with it, before having seen a single episode of the show! But I adore it even more now after watching the entire first season and into the second. cjmarlowe has successfully rendered the spirit of the Winchester's and their story to an even more fascinating time period in America. And it isn't merely a rehash of Kripke's show but an alternate adventure!
Reccer's Caveats: Even if you aren't ready to jump into reading a novel length fanfic, click to view tammylee's wonderful artwork. Dean in a fly boy jacket! Sam in a frock coat! Tessa, Dean's version of a Model T..... And listen to the soundtrack while you view the pics. You won't be sorry!

Title: Revelations
Author/Artist: marinarusalkawith art by ileliberte
Rating: PG-13
Length/Word Count: novel length
Warnings/Spoilers:
Summary: AU. Veteran FBI agent Victor Henriksen isn't at all happy when a rookie ATF agent horns in on his investigation of a possible serial arsonist. Still, Agent Winchester's forensics expertise does come in useful. But as the clues and the bodies pile up, Victor begins to suspect that his new partner knows more than he's telling about the case.
Reccer's Comments: I browsed your del.icio.us and know this was already recc'd here but so far as I'm concerned, the praises of this cannot be sung often enough! This is absolutely fabulous writing. Totally, best seller cop fic, case file stuff. This could be a pilot for a spin-off TV show.
Reccer's Caveats: It left me hungry for a sequel.

Title: Snuffleupagus
Author: kellifer_fic
Rating: G
Length/Word Count: ~2,100
Summary: Sometimes imaginary friends... aren't.
Reccer's Comments: This little tale packs a major punch!
Reccer's Comments 2: Just know that it's awesome. And read it.
Reccer's Caveats: Not for the weak of heart.

Title: Everything's A-Okay (The Cuckoo's Nest Remix)
Author: ignipes
Rating: PG-13
Length/Word Count: ~3,600
Warnings/Spoilers:
Summary: He doesn't know anymore which memories are real.
Reccer's Comments: This is an excellent if surreal continuation of Snuffleupagus.
Reccer's Caveats: Boy, are these fics AU baby!

Title: Blended Reality
Author/Artist: sg2009
Rating: K+
Length/Word Count: 25,159
Spoilers: for s4/s5
Summary: John runs into his sons in a bar. And they seem to be under the impression he's been dead for three years.
Reccer's Comments: Like the idea of this.
Reccer's Caveats: You'll wish it were longer.

Title: Clangs
Author/Artist: vee_fic
Rating: R
Length/Word Count: Two parts
Warnings/Spoilers: Language, scariness, and adult themes
Summary: A homecoming. A horror. It was just a stupid accident. It doesn't have to be any more complicated than that.
Reccer's Comments: Another way the Winchesters could've turned out. It somehow manages to break your heart even more than the canonical version.
Reccer's Comments 2: A compelling look at what might have been, if John had not taken up hunting, and the boys had never found that world. What Sam and Dean might have been and done and become. Which is real? The world with evil, or the world without it?
Reccer's Caveats: This really disturbed me the first time I read it. It's supposed to.

Title: now jerk that pistol and get to work
Author/Artist: apocalypsos
Rating: PG-13
Length/Word Count: One part
Summary: The plus side of being in such a fine new place is that a man who can handle a deck of cards and a loaded pistol with the same deadly precision can manage just fine.
Reccer's Comments: I've always said that Supernatural was a modern western and this is proof that I'm right

Title: Five Times Dean Was a Girll
Author/Artist: teand
Rating: PG-13
Length/Word Count: 1,660 words
Summary: Refer to title.
Reccer's Comments: An intriguing take on how things might have been if one of the Winchesters wasn't a boy.

01 June 2010 @ 05:05 pm
Title: Blessings Against the Thunder
Author/Artist: Vanzetti (vaznetti)
Rating: PG/R
Length/Word Count: Long
Warnings/Spoilers: only for the series premise
Summary: Post-Serenity, Zoe Washburne bumps into a man who needs a hand putting a ghost to rest. Firefly/SPN crossover in which the Winchesters hunt ghosts and demons on the fringe worlds of the Alliance.
Reccer's Comments: Excellent series of stories where the Winchesters and Serenity's crew meet up and eventually team up, not without some friction. John/Zoe, but it's more about the plot than the relationship.
Reccer's Caveats: Unfinished, but definitely worth reading anyway.

Title: Agents and Hunters
Author/Artist: sg2009fic
Rating: PG-13
Length/Word Count: Long
Warnings/Spoilers:
Summary: People who work in Abby's lab are never what they seem. Sam is no exception.
Reccer's Comments: I love a good cop-show crossover, especially those post 4x01. This one has an excellent outsider POV on the Winchesters, and is also a bit of a casefic. It has clever!boys and peril and a bit of h/c and some humor.

Title and Link: Elsinore
Authort: malkingrey (waxingthecat)
Rating: PG
Length/Word Count: approx. 23,700 words.
Warnings/Spoilers: Occasional violence and bad language.
Summary: Crossover with Shakespeare's Hamlet.
Reccer's Comments: First of all, I love the premise. While you don't have to be familiar with Shakespeare's Hamlet to enjoy this story, it's great fun to explore how the Winchesters deal with the supernatural events at the Danish court.
Also, the author shows great skill in adapting Supernatural canon and characterization to the medieval setting.
Reccer's Caveats: Decan (Dean) ends up in bed with a female character at one point, but there's nothing graphic and it's not exactly romantic.

Title: A Grand Sneer
Author/Artist: moragmacpherson (author), angelicfoodcake (artist)
Rating: teen for potty-mouths
Length/Word Count: 35,379 words
Spoilers: Through "Sam, Interrupted," (5.11) for Supernatural, through Unseen Academicals for Discworld
Summary: While hunting in a library, Dean slips into L-space and runs all the way to the Discworld. Getting home is going to take a little more effort. (Discworld crossover)
Reccer's Comments: Really excellent character interactions, especially between Dean and various Discworlders. The showdown with the angels and demons was good too. The art is lovely as well.

This week's rec contributors, harrigan, twasadark, izhilzha, fish_echo, phorenice, july_july_july, cofax7, werewolfsfan, claudiapriscus, litponrm, marlowe78, tanaquific, feliciakw, and dotfic, will make you feel bad for not being as awesome as they are.

28 May 2010 @ 04:18 pm
Title: Crossbones
Author/Artist: baylorsr
Rating: R
Length/Word Count: 17,772 words
Warnings/Spoilers: Spoilers for 4x03 'In the Beginning' but AU for events in 5x13 'The Song Remains the Same'.
Summary: The day they buried Mary’s parents, she sat John down at her kitchen table and told him that her family hunted monsters.
Reccer's Comments: This story is brutal and horrible and wonderful. It does an amazing job of showing how things might have been, with great supporting appearances by Bobby and Pastor Jim.
Reccer's Caveats: While John and Mary are a married couple in the story and do married couple things, the R rating is for violence and language, not sexual content. It definitely falls on the gen side of the scale.

Title: Gimme Shelter
Author/Artist: nilchance
Rating: PG
Length/Word Count: One part
Summary: If Mike Gunther had called Child Protective Services.
Reccer's Comments: A disturbing look at how everything could have turned out if they boys had been taken away from John at the very beginning with bonus Bobby awesomeness.

Title: Palindromes
Author/Artist: charlie_d_blue
Rating: PG-13
Length/Word Count: 7,300
Warnings/Spoilers: character death
Summary: AU. John dies on the ceiling, and Mary goes after the YED.
Reccer's Comments: This is a gorgeous, heartrending fic, with an unforgettable look at Mary Winchester. She became the shivering tremble of a whetting stone across the edge of a blade, the heavy scent of gun oil and long afternoons working on the once-hated Impala

Title: Familiar Faces
Author/Artist: sg2009fic
Rating: PG-13
Length/Word Count:WIP, ~6000 currently.
Warnings/Spoilers:
Summary: AU John and Mary live only to hunt evil after losing their sons to the fire. The memory of their boys always burns until they meet a boy that reminds them so much of what they lost they start to remember there is more to life than revenge.
Reccer's Comments: The summary had me feeling a bit skeptical, but this story is already turning out to be awesome. The best AUs are the one with a twist that make you hungry to know more about them. This has that.
Reccer's Caveats: Work in progress.

25 May 2010 @ 12:42 pm
Title: The Day The World Went Away
Author scribblesinink
Rating: Teen
Length/Word Count: ~14,500
Summary: Sam finds himself in a world where he doesn't exist.
Reccer's Comments: This is a parallel world AU in which Sam discovers what life would be like for the Winchesters if he didn't exist. Sam's relationships with his family in the parallel world -- especially with John -- are wonderfully drawn, and the course of their lives if the yellow-eyed demon hadn't turned up seems very realistic. Of course, even in parallel worlds, the supernatural isn't absent, and Sam discovers he was sent to this world at this particular time for a purpose. On top of that, there's an awesome appearance from Missouri, whom we don't see enough of in stories, who helps Sam get back to his own world.
Reccer's Caveats: There's some brief examination of Sam's relationship with Jess, given in this world Dean and Jess are married, but the story doesn't dwell on it.

Title: Specific Relativity
Author/Artist: gekizetsu
Rating: PG-13
Length/Word Count: 11,800 words
Warnings/Spoilers: Cuddling, mild angst, cuddling, humor, cuddling (author's warnings)
Summary: Something based off the song Unwell by Matchbox 20 (lyrics follow the tale), and an AU Sam who has always had visions and is not quite right as a result. Don’t worry; he’s mostly happy. Casefic; notquiteright!Sam and superprotective!Dean hunt for the ‘special children’ gone bad when they’re not hunting demons with their father.
Reccer's Comments: Of the hundreds of SPN fic I have bookmarked - this one is in my top 10 most beloved!
Reccer's Caveats: none. (Other than - if you're not a fan of cuddling, don't let the author's warnings deter you from reading this!)

Title: And Won the Soul's Rest
Author/Artist: concernedlily
Rating: PG
Length/Word Count: ~31,000
Warnings/Spoilers:
Summary: Sam of Winchester entered the Abbey five years ago. Now, his brother has come to get him out.
Reccer's Comments: This marvelous tale is a re-imagining of the Winchesters story and search for John set in Europe in the Middle Ages.
Reccer's Caveats: This story not only examines the Winchester family relationships but matters of faith, organized religion and excommunication and it's possible effect on the soul.

Title: Can't (But I Can)
Author/Artist: neppie
Rating: PG
Length/Word Count: 1,128 words
Summary: Just because you can’t hear, doesn’t mean you can’t. Sam has always been deaf and Dean has always been a little stupid.
Reccer's Comments: I'm a sucker for sign language use in fic, and this is a solid, real, brotherly moment in a world where Sam is Deaf...and Dean gets a bit of a revelation.
